About

Ian has painted in oils since his early teens. He gave up the prospect of art school to study at university in the UK, firstly in sociology and then town planning. He graduated with a Masters degree and commenced a career as a town planner practising in the UK, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. He is a Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia and a Life Member of the Local Government Planners Association (of which he is a past President).

Ian returned seriously to painting in oils in early 2018.

He has exhibited pieces at various community art exhibitions in Perth since 2018. He has also held two exhibitions of his paintings at Art @ The Boulevard where over 30 of his paintings were on display in 2021 and 2023. His next exhibition will be held during July and August 2024 at The Boulevard, underneath the Library.

Generally Ian’s pieces are a compilation of a number of ideas. His main areas have included various dogs and their owners and land and seascapes from Australia, notably around his home in West Leederville and its Lake Monger, and various favourite locations including Greece, Italy and Scotland. Ian’s paintings, particularly recent ones featuring dogs in historic poses, were featured in the window of Jacksons Art Supplies on Rokeby Road, Subiaco between March 9th and 30th March 2024.

Ian has developed a style that owes much to pointillism, with the difference that he uses squares to give the impression of mosaics.

Ian received the Highly Commended Award at the 2023 City of Belmont Art Awards for his painting “The orchestra of the opera by Degas – with dogs”.
